About Us
Welcome to A Woman’s Place! A Woman’s Place is a safe shelter for survivors of domestic violence. We offer free and confidential
services, advocacy, outreach, education, and many other services to
victims of domestic violence and the community. We are located in Weld
County, Colorado.
Our Mission:
to shelter and help empower victims/survivors of domestic abuse to
become safe, secure and self-reliant; and through education and
collaboration, to mobilize our community to help prevent domestic
violence.
The History of A Woman’s Place
Prior to 1977, the local chapter of National Organization for Women
(NOW) started a rape crisis line, which later become Sexual Assault
Survivors, Inc (SASI). In 1977 NOW formed a Battered Women’s Task
Force to identify and work towards solving the domestic violence issues
in Greeley and the greater Weld County area. A Battering Incident
Survey conducted in the area found there were 3 incidents daily of
women being abused. It was determined that a long term
comprehensive shelter was needed for abused women and children.
Although
one woman in the community had a bed she kept open for battered women,
this wasn’t nearly enough to meet the demands of the community.
As a result, A Woman’s Place was established as a not-for-profit
organization. Although there was no shelter in place initially, a
crisis line was established (with the same phone number we have today).
In
1980, an older home and land was provided to A Woman’s Place by Greeley
Urban Renewal Authority. The home needed to be moved across town
to its new location, a basement needed to be dug, the inside needed to
be rebuilt and furnished. The shelter eventually became a reality
with a dedication in December of 1980, and the opening of its doors in
January 1981. The dream became a reality through many
fundraisers, donations from Monfort Family Foundation, Greeley
Association of Banks, Weld County, the City of Greeley, Greeley
Excavation and numerous community contributions. In 2003, a
completed addition project doubled the size of our safe house so that
we would not have to turn women and their children away due to lack of
space. |
